Contraindications/Doctor Referral

Contraindications

  • Clients who have cardiovascular disorders that require a pacemaker or defibrillator should not receive electrolysis as it can potentially interfere with these devices.

  • Those with bleeding disorders or who are on strong anticoagulant therapy such as Coumadin  are ineligible for treatment.

  • Blood disorders such as hepatitis, HIV/AIDS will also disqualify a client from receiving treatment.

doctor permission

Doctor Permission Needed

  • Diabetic clients have slow healing capabilities. Therefore, we will not treat the lower extremities for someone who has diabetes and we will require written permission from the client's primary care doctor prior to providing treatment to any other area of the body. Treatment may be stopped at the discretion of the electrologist if the client's skin is not healing appropriately. Our client's safety is very important!

  • Hair in moles are a common request for permanent hair removal. A written doctor's note must be provided prior to receiving hair removal in a mole. This is for your safety to ensure it is a "normal" mole and not cancerous.

  • Although there are no known contraindications to receiving electrolysis while pregnant, we highly discourage pregnant women from receiving treatment and are very cautious when it comes to this matter. Pregnant clients may obtain written permission from their OB/GYN in order to receive treatment during their pregnancy if they desire to do so. However, no treatment will be performed on/near/around the abdomen, breasts, or groin area. We will also no longer perform electrolysis during the last three months of your pregnancy.

Please Note: All doctor's notes must be on official letterhead and include the client's name and DOB. It must specify what area of the body the doctor is giving permission to receive treatment as well as the type of treatment (all forms of electrolysis or a specific modality). If permission is for a mole, the exact location of the mole is required and the letter must state that the hairs in the specified mole may be treated with electrolysis. If a client is obtaining permission for electrolysis during pregnancy, the client's due date must be in the letter as we will not treat pregnant women during their last trimester (last three months) in an abundance of caution.

Other Considerations

There are some people who may not be able to receive treatment for a temporary period of time. This includes clients who are on certain medications. Those taking Accutane must be off the medication for 6 months prior to receiving electrolysis treatment. Those using Retin-A or other products containing retinoids should stop use at least 2 weeks before receiving treatment.

Those who have an active outbreak of cold sores or herpes simplex virus also need to refrain from treatment. This is because the virus can spread due to the break in the skin that occurs during electrolysis. Treatment will not be performed on any area of the body until all scabs are healed from the outbreak. Clients who have warts are also not eligible for treatment until the warts are gone. Bacterial infections, fungal infections or parasitic infections must all be resolved prior to receiving any electrolysis treatment.

Other conditions (if present in the treatment area) that will need to be resolved prior to your appointment are sunburns, recent wounds, bruising, or edema. If any of these are present in the area you wish to have treated, your appointment must be postponed until these have resolved or a different area of the body that is not affected must be selected for that particular appointment.

Areas with active/visible skin conditions such as dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea will be avoided so as to not cause harm to the delicate skin in those areas.
