Structure of a Hair
1. Epidermis – the outer most layer of the skin
2. Dermis – the layer below the epidermis of the skin
3. Arrector Pili Muscle – muscle fibers attached to the hair follicle; when it contracts, it causes goosebumps to form on the skin
4. Inner Root Sheath – surrounds and protects the growing hair
5. Outer Root Sheath – is an extension of the epidermis, surrounds the hair follicle
6. Hair Medulla – the inner most layer of the hair
7. Hair Cortex – the middle layer of the hair, gives hair its strength
8. Hair Cuticle – the outermost layer of of the hair, protects the inner layers of the hair
9. Dermal Papilla – contains capillaries that provide hair its nourishment
10. Sebaceous Gland – secrete oil called sebum for lubricating hair and skin; located everywhere on the body except the palms of hands and soles of feet
